Many of these people were deposited by their families in Buenos Aires’ 149-year old Borda psychiatric hospital’s Admissions Ward, condemned by society to abandonment and oblivion.
Inside a shabby shed in the hospital’s gardens I invited the mad ones to come in and pose without the gaze of doctors and security guards. I asked the men to sit down and, literally, look at themselves in the mirrored-glass I glued to my camera lens.
General Perón’s reincarnation drove me from love to despair. I am told that another one killed his mother. This one keeps repeating that his testicles were punctured and the rest of his organs removed from his body. The one that masturbated in front of me, angry at being thrown out, came back aero-boxing, with a knife in his hand, in front of a sharp broken mirror. My favourite is a delirious kid living in the body of 53-year-old man. That one wears exactly the same clothes every day. This other one was Jesus for a few years. Amongst them there might be an architect, a lawyer and a social phobic. There could also be one that has cut his mother’s head off and cooked it in the oven.
Jacques Lacan proposes that the ‘mirror stage’ constitutes a fundamental experience of identification in which the child conquers the image of his or her own body and helps to put an end to the psychic experience known as the fantasy of the fragmented body. It is through this narcissistic passage known as the ‘mirror stage’ that the child is able to identify with others.

Muchas de estas personas fueron depositadas por sus familias en el Servicio de Admisión del Hospital Borda, condenadas por la sociedad al abandono y al olvido.
Dentro de un galpón derruído en los jardines del hospital invité a los locos a que posen sin la mirada de médicos, enfermeros o guardias. Les pedí que se sienten y -literalmente- se miren a un espejo vidriado que pegué a la lente de mi cámara.
La reencarnación del General Perón me llevó del amor al hartazgo. Me cuentan que otro mató a su madre. Uno me repite que le agujerearon los testículos y que le removieron el resto de los órganos de su cuerpo. Otro que nunca fue un paciente pero duerme en los jardines del hospital, intentó robarme la cámara. El que se masturbó enfrente mío se enojó cuando lo eché y volvió la semana siguiente boxeando con un cuchillo en la mano frente a un espejo roto. Mi preferido es un niño delirante viviendo en el cuerpo de un hombre de 53 años. Aquél usa exactamente la misma vestimenta todos los días. Este otro fue Jesús por un tiempo. Entre ellos puede haber un arquitecto, un abogado o un fóbico social, también alguien que le haya cortado la cabeza a la madre para meterla en el horno.
Lacan propone que el estadío del espejo constituye una experiencia de identificación fundamental en la cual el niño conquista la imagen de su propio cuerpo. La identificación primordial del niño con esa imagen es fundamental para la estructuración del yo y ayuda a poner término a esa vivencia psíquica conocida como fantasía del cuerpo fragmentado. Es a partir del tránsito narcisista que implica el estadío del espejo, que el niño puede hacer una identificación con el otro.
